TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Visitors to Kaohsiung’s Shuanghu Forest Park (雙湖森林公園) can enjoy lush greenery and a thriving ecosystem featuring butterflies, dragonflies, and frogs following the city government’s restoration efforts.
Kaohsiung Public Works Bureau Director Yang Chin-fu (楊欽富) said Monday that more than 20 butterfly species, 10 dragonfly species, and several frog species have been recorded at the park, demonstrating the success of restoration efforts to create an urban ecological habitat, per a press release.
Yang said the park has become an important recreational area for residents in Sanmin and Niaosong districts. The city government established an ecological corridor connecting the park with the nearby Chengcing Lake Scenic Area (澄清湖風景區), creating what officials described as a “green city model” where humans and nature coexist.
City officials said a variety of nectar-producing plants have been planted along pathways throughout the park to attract butterflies for feeding and breeding. Additional vegetation has been added to provide shelter for butterfly larvae, creating a suitable environment for species to thrive.
A retention pond has also been incorporated into the park’s design, with aquatic and amphibious plants introduced to create wetland habitats suitable for dragonflies, frogs, and other wildlife. Officials said the park’s transformation has made it an ideal location for ecological education and outdoor recreation.
With the ecosystem continuing to mature, the city government is encouraging residents to visit Shuanghu Forest Park with their families on weekends. Additionally, the Public Works Bureau urged visitors to help protect the park’s ecological achievements by following three principles: no capturing, no feeding, and no destruction.
