TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Authorities will temporarily close Danjiang Bridge on Friday as Typhoon Bavi approaches, with forecasters warning of strong winds along the country's northern coast.
The Highway Bureau said the bridge's pedestrian, bicycle, and scooter lanes will close at 8 p.m., followed by the main traffic lanes and bus lanes at 11 p.m., per UDN. The agency said the schedule could change depending on weather conditions and that updated closure notices will be issued two to three hours in advance.
Drivers traveling between Tamsui and Bali will be diverted to Guandu Bridge during the closure. The bureau said Danjiang Bridge's location at the Tamsui River estuary makes it subject to sudden, powerful gusts during typhoons.
The bureau said the bridge is designed to withstand severe weather, UDN reported. However, the precautionary closure was implemented to protect people.
It also urged the public to avoid mountain roads and coastal highways while typhoon warnings remain in effect. Travelers can check real-time highway conditions through the bureau's website or call 1968 or 0800-001-821 for the latest traffic information.
