TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s population declined for the 30th consecutive month in June as births in the first half of 2026 fell 16.3% from a year earlier, according to the interior ministry.
Household registration data showed a population of 23,243,565 at the end of June, down 103,176 from a year earlier, per Mirror Media. Compared with May, the population decreased by 9,076.
Taiwan recorded 46,344 births from January through June, down 9,031 from 55,375 during the same period last year. June saw 7,324 births, 1,644 fewer than a year earlier but 492 more than in May.
There were 16,340 deaths, down 214 from a year earlier but up 1,182 from May, Mirror Media reported. The annual crude birth rate was 3.83 per 1,000 people in June, while the annual crude death rate was 8.55 per 1,000.
Taoyuan recorded the fastest annual population growth at 0.29%, followed by Lienchiang County at 0.28%, and Hsinchu County at 0.24%. Kinmen County posted the steepest decline at 1.49%, followed by Chiayi County at 1.20%, and Taipei at 1.14%.
China Times reported that 65,101 people moved to Taiwan in June, down 6,733 from the same month last year and 4,311 from May. A total of 65,161 people moved out, down 7,816 from a year earlier and 5,828 from the previous month, resulting in a net out-migration of 60 people.
According to the World Health Organization, a population with 7% aged 65+ is considered an aging society, 14% is an aged society, and 20% is a super-aged society. Last year, Taiwan became a super-aged society.
People aged 65 and older now account for 20.49% of the population, per CNA. Residents aged 0 to 14 made up 11.34% of the population, while those aged 15 to 64 accounted for 68.18%.
Taipei had the country's highest proportion of residents aged 65 and older at 24.61%, while Hsinchu County had the lowest at 15.38%.
