TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration issued a land warning for Typhoon Bavi on Friday for Keelung, Yilan, New Taipei, Taipei, and Hualien.
The CWA said Bavi’s center was 700 km east of Eluanbi and was moving northwest at 25 kph. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 162 kph, gusts of up to 198 kph, and a radius of 380 km.
There is also a sea warning in place for the Bashi Channel, offshore waters of eastern and northern Taiwan, and the northern Taiwan Strait. Bavi is forecast to pass within 270 km east of Taipei over the next 24 hours.
CWA Forecast Center Director Lin Po-tung (林伯東) said rain will intensify in mountainous areas into the evening, with the heaviest impacts expected Saturday, per FTV News. He forecast torrential rain in parts of New Taipei, Yilan, Miaoli, and Hsinchu, with more than 350 millimeters possible over the next 24 hours.
Lin said the strongest winds are expected along the northern and central coastal areas, Tainan, the Hengchun Peninsula, and the east coast. He added that the roughest seas will be off the east coast, with high-wave warnings remaining in effect.
