TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Four Chinese coast guard vessels entered restricted waters near Kinmen on Wednesday, prompting Taiwan’s Coast Guard to deploy patrol boats and issue warnings.
The Coast Guard said the Chinese vessels entered the waters in the morning and its patrol boats shadowed them. It said warnings were broadcast until all four vessels departed more than three hours later.
The agency said the operation occurred as Taiwan prepared for Typhoon Bavi’s approach. It said it continued disaster-response preparations while maintaining maritime security and sovereignty missions.
The Coast Guard accused China’s coast guard of continuing gray-zone harassment operations before the typhoon, saying the actions threaten regional stability and increase navigational risks. It said it will maintain surveillance and rapid-response capabilities to counter such activities.
