TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) was acquitted of irregularities Wednesday in the sale of three KMT companies dating back to when he chaired the party.
In 2005, the KMT sold China Television Company, Broadcasting Corporation of China, and Central Motion Picture Company in a deal which lost the party an estimated NT$7.2 billion (US$224.37 million). Prosecutors charged Ma with breach of trust in 2018.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a final appeal by prosecutors against Ma’s December acquittal by the Taiwan High Court, the Liberty Times reported.
The only person convicted was former KMT Legislator Alex Tsai (蔡正元), who started serving a prison sentence of three years and six months in March.
The politician was found guilty of embezzling NT$280 million from Central Motion Picture Company when he chaired the movie business in 2006. The court found him guilty of diverting the funds first to a company he founded and later to his own bank account.
