TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) said Tuesday that China’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile launch into the South Pacific highlights the need for democracies to strengthen cooperation.
Meeting a delegation from the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), Hsiao said Taiwan and the alliance share a commitment to protecting democracy and freedom in the face of challenges posed by China, per CNA. She said all countries have a stake in ensuring Beijing’s power is not used to undermine the way of life they share.
Hsiao said Taiwan continues to face mounting political and economic pressure from China, which seeks to isolate the country diplomatically and block its participation in international organizations. She thanked IPAC for supporting Taiwan and helping like-minded partners better understand issues affecting the country.
The vice president also referred to her remarks at the China in the World Summit in Taipei, where she said recent events, including China’s intercontinental ballistic missile launch into the South Pacific, demonstrate Beijing’s expanding global influence, per Liberty Times. She said such developments should concern all countries because they affect the international community.
She thanked IPAC and its members for advancing Taiwan-related resolutions in legislatures around the world and speaking out in support of Taiwan. Their efforts, she said, remind Taiwan that it is not alone in confronting shared challenges.
