TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration said Tuesday that Typhoon Bavi is expected to have its greatest effect on Taiwan on Friday and Saturday.
CWA forecaster Lee Meng-hsuan (李孟軒) said the agency expects to issue a sea warning Thursday and a land warning Thursday night or early Friday, per UDN. He said the timing could change because the storm remains about 2,100 kilometers east-southeast of the country.
Bavi is expected to weaken slightly before reaching Taiwan, but remain between a strong and moderate typhoon. It is expected to enter waters near the Ryukyu Islands on Friday, move east of Taiwan, pass northeast of the nation Saturday morning, and continue toward China that evening.
WeatherRisk Director Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) said Bavi's eye is most likely to pass between Yilan and Japan's Ishigaki Island, while the chance of it making landfall in Taiwan is relatively low, per Liberty Times.
Lee said rainfall is expected to increase on Friday, per CNA. The heaviest rainfall is forecast for central and northern Taiwan, the northeast, and mountainous areas of Nantou and Hualien, particularly north of Taichung.
Winds are expected to strengthen across Taiwan beginning Wednesday, while large waves could affect the north coast, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Matsu could also see large waves from Thursday, and the agency urged the public to exercise caution near coastal areas.
