TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on Monday hosted a lunch for a visiting Guatemalan delegation in Taipei to discuss ways to strengthen ties, trade, and cooperation.
Led by Guatemalan Congress President Luis Alberto Contreras Colindres, the cross-party delegation included lawmakers who work on justice reform, economic affairs, national security, and other areas. Contreras said the visit showed that lawmakers from different parties support Guatemala’s ties with Taiwan.
Lin said Guatemala has long been one of Taiwan’s closest allies and that relations between the two countries have entered their 92nd year. He thanked Contreras and Guatemala’s congress for speaking in support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
“Taiwan and Guatemala have worked together on public health, infrastructure, higher education, and farming tech,” the foreign ministry said. Lin said Taiwan will also encourage more businesses to invest in Guatemala and help the country become a stronger base for Taiwanese companies entering overseas markets.
Contreras thanked Taiwan for its work in Guatemala, saying Taiwan-backed projects have helped public health, information technology, disaster prevention, and scholarship programs. He said Taiwan’s move from a developing economy to a global technology center offers lessons for other countries.
The foreign ministry said both countries exchanged views on key areas of cooperation and trade. It said Taiwan will continue to deepen exchanges with Guatemala and strengthen ties based on their long-standing friendship.
