TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang (謝國樑) bowed and apologized to parents Monday after two preschool workers at a city kindergarten were accused of abusing children, CNA reported.
Speaking at a meeting with parents, Hsieh said the city government would set up six laptops at Baifu Junior High School next week. The school will serve as a viewing site where parents can review security camera footage from the kindergarten.
Parents said the city had earlier promised to create a Line messaging group with lawyers to provide quick legal advice. They said no lawyers had joined the group, leaving parents to handle questions about childcare subsidies by themselves.
Hsieh said the city would form the legal support group as soon as possible. He said officials from the city’s legal and labor departments would also join the group to answer parents’ questions.
The mayor said lawyers would meet parents for two hours each week. He said the city would carry out the promises made at the meeting.
Liberty Times reported that some parents also criticized the education department’s handling of the case. Hsieh said the city would review the conduct of Deputy Education Department Director Yang Yung-fen (楊永芬) and decide on possible punishment next Monday.
One parent said she had trusted Hsieh but was disappointed by the city’s response. She said the case might not have received proper attention if parents had not protested outside the kindergarten.
