TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Taipei City Councilor Chung Hsiao-ping (鍾小平) said Sunday that the opposition alliance between the KMT and the TPP could cost the KMT a seat on the Taipei City Council in the Zhongzheng-Wanhua electoral district.
Former KMT vice presidential candidate Jaw Shau-kong (趙少康) attended the campaign headquarters opening ceremony for TPP Taipei City Council candidate Wu I-hsuan (吳怡萱) to show support for the party, per Storm Media. Jaw said he hoped the TPP would win six seats on the Taipei City Council.
Jaw said the best outcome would be for no single party to hold a majority on the council. He added that the TPP's legislative caucus has demonstrated its influence in the legislature because the KMT and DPP rely on its support to pass legislation.
Commenting on Jaw's appearance, Chung said the event highlighted the challenges city council candidates face in supporting the opposition alliance, per ETtoday. He warned that if Wu wins a seat, the KMT could lose one of its own and called on party leaders to find a solution.
DPP Taipei City Council candidate Chang Ming-yu (張銘祐) said Jaw's appearance signaled cracks in the opposition alliance, per Liberty Times. He said Jaw's endorsement could dilute KMT support in the district by encouraging voters to back TPP candidates instead.
Chang said the KMT's strategy was intended to strengthen opposition cooperation ahead of the 2026 local elections and the 2028 presidential election, but it could ultimately cost the party council seats. Fellow DPP Taipei City Council candidate Ma You-wen (馬郁雯) echoed the view, saying the KMT risks losing one of the four seats it currently holds in the Zhongzheng-Wanhua district, per Liberty Times.
However, KMT Taipei City Council candidate Chang Yen-ting (張延廷) dismissed those concerns. Drawing on what he described as his firsthand observations, Chang said Wu's support comes primarily from politically unaffiliated voters and does not threaten the KMT's voter base.
Chang Yen-ting added that Wu narrowly missed winning a seat in the 2022 city council election despite receiving one of the highest vote totals among unsuccessful candidates, demonstrating that she already has a strong foundation of support.
