TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) wished the US a happy 250th anniversary in a video posted on Facebook by the American Institute in Taiwan Saturday.
Standing next to AIT Director Raymond Greene, Lai praised the bravery of the American people for seeking freedom in 1776. He also drew a parallel between 250 years of independence for the US and 30 years of direct presidential elections in Taiwan.
The same kind of bravery moved the Taiwanese people to choose democracy, he said. Lai added that even though the wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean separated Taiwan and the US, he believed freedom could bridge the distance, and democracy could make relations even closer.
He hoped Taiwan and the US could continue to deepen their rock-solid relationship based on the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances underpinning US support for Taipei.
Lai closed off the 1-minute 10-second reel by wishing the US a happy anniversary on the Fourth of July.
