TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Typhoon Bavi has intensified and could come closest to Taiwan at the start of next weekend, though doubts about its path persist, reports said Saturday.
Bavi could bring heavy rain to most of Taiwan on July 10-11, the Liberty Times reported. Residents of mountainous areas north of Taichung and of Yilan County should take special precautions, forecasters advised.
The current high-pressure area will continue to bring high temperatures until July 9, but during the evening of that day, Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, and Yilan may see heavy rain.
The eye of the storm is currently 3,400 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan, per UDN. Bavi is moving west, turning west-northwest at a speed of 14 kph.
Earlier forecasts predicted Bavi could turn north before reaching Taiwan. Bavi's direction depends on a weakening of a high-pressure area expected from July 7, according to UDN.
