TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan on Thursday approved a wave of major overseas investments, including a US$20 billion (NT$639 billion) expansion by TSMC for its Arizona subsidiary.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs Department of Investment Review approved nine major investment projects, per Rti. This includes seven outbound investment applications totaling NT$736.61 billion and two foreign investment projects in Taiwan worth NT$6.75 billion.
The largest case involved TSMC's plans to construct a 12-inch wafer fab and advanced packaging facility in Arizona, per Liberty Times. The commission said this marks the sixth approval for TSMC’s US expansion since 2020, bringing the cumulative approved investment in the unit to NT$1.41 trillion.
Formosa Plastics Group secured approval to restructure NT$9.34 billion in assets, transferring them into new shares of its US subsidiary, per UDN. Taiwan Union Technology received approval to invest NT$1.58 billion in its Thailand unit.
Nanya Technology received approval for an NT$31.95 billion investment, primarily for US-dollar deposits to reduce foreign-exchange hedging costs, UDN reported. Quanta Computer was approved for a NT$19.17 billion investment through its Cayman unit to support US manufacturing operations.
Lite-On Technology secured approval for a NT$29.36 billion capital injection into its US subsidiary for production expansion. Fubon Life Insurance received approval for a NT$6.18 billion investment in a Jersey-based property leasing subsidiary, according to UDN.
Additional foreign capital inflows were approved for Taiwanese pharmaceutical and investment firms.
