TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Thursday urged the legislature to approve a flood control budget as Taiwan continues to face flooding risks ahead of typhoon season.
Lai said flooding in southern Taiwan and Taipei’s Neihu District was caused by the outer circulation of a typhoon combined with a stationary front, per UDN. He said the central government will work with local authorities on flood prevention projects.
Lai made the remarks while attending a religious ceremony at Chih Nah Temple in Taipei’s Wenshan District. DPP Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen (沈伯洋) and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) were also present at the event.
He said the central government has proposed a four-year NT$100 billion (US$3.1 billion) flood control plan, but it has yet to be passed by the legislature, per CNA. He urged lawmakers to prioritize public safety and economic development.
Lai said the government will support local authorities in assisting affected residents and strengthening flood resilience. He added that local governments should review flood causes and submit improvement plans where necessary.
