TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Ads promoting travel to China should carry warnings about its new ethnic unity law, World United Formosans for Independence said Thursday.
The Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress took effect on Wednesday and has been condemned in Taiwan as it may extend China’s reach to affect Chinese citizens, people from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, overseas Chinese, and foreign nationals for their conduct outside the country.
WUFI said advertising for travel to China should carry warnings about the law, FTV reported. The group compared its proposal to health warnings on tobacco and alcohol products.
The group said Taiwanese traveling to China risk being arrested under the new law. WUFI recommended that the government should also advise people to seek out democratic countries that value the rule of law and human rights as their holiday destinations, the FTV report said.
WUFI condemned the new law as designed to expand China’s jurisdiction outside its borders, per CNA. The term “ethnic unity” served to cover illegal intimidation, surveillance, harassment, and arrest, the group said.
