TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s passport ranks No. 34 on the latest edition of the Henley Passport Index, reports said Thursday.
The ranking drawn up by British consultancy firm Henley and Partners was based on how many countries passport holders could enter without having to apply for a visa. The Taiwanese passport gave visa-free access to 135 countries, the Liberty Times reported.
Singapore topped the list as its passport allowed visa-free entry to 192 countries. Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates shared the second spot with 188 countries, followed by Sweden in third place with 187 countries.
As to East Asian passports, Malaysia ranked seventh, Hong Kong 14th, Brunei 19th, and Macau 33rd. China featured at No. 59 on the latest list, with its passport allowing visa-free travel to 83 countries.
Henley and Partners said its passport index relied on information provided by the International Air Transport Authority and updated through its own research and online data. The index, updated monthly, covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations.
