TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Shoushan Zoo will offer free admission to children under 12 through Aug. 31 to celebrate the summer vacation, per a Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau press release.
The zoo has also extended its weekend operating hours until 6:30 p.m. to give families more time to enjoy the attractions during the school break. The zoo also made preparations to ensure both visitors and animals keep cool this summer.
Zookeepers recently trimmed an alpaca's thick fur, and Formosan black bear Bobby was given ring-shaped ice blocks while Bengal tiger Xiao Hong (小紅) and African lion Xiao Xin (小辛) gnawed on large ice blocks. Orangutan A-hung (阿宏) enjoyed a frozen fruit-and-vegetable treat, and crested porcupines were given buckets filled with chilled vegetables.
The zoo's popular family water play area, featuring a misting system and a wading pool, is also open throughout the summer. Shower facilities are available for visitors who wish to change after using the water attractions.
On the final two weekends of July, the zoo will host a Little Wild Warriors obstacle course, where children can complete physical challenges while learning about wildlife and conservation. Registration is available online through the zoo's Facebook page.
Kao Min-lin (高閔琳), director-general of Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau, said the zoo continues to expand its enrichment program by tailoring cooling facilities and treats to animals. This helps the animals remain active and display their natural behaviors during the hottest months of the year, per the press release.
Kao also encouraged visitors to extend their trips beyond the zoo by exploring nearby mountain districts such as Qishan, Meinong, and Neimen. This allows families to combine ecological attractions with cultural experiences and outdoor recreation.
