TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan City Government said Wednesday that its new Xuejia pump station removed about 254,000 tonnes of water during heavy rain on June 25, helping improve flood control in the area.
UDN reported that the pump station was completed on June 10. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) visited the site Wednesday and said the project was an important step for flood prevention in Xuejia.
The city government said Xuejia is low-lying and prone to flooding during heavy rain. When water levels rise in nearby drainage channels, rainwater in the area can be difficult to remove without pumps.
The project cost more than NT$360 million (US$11.1 million). The city said it received central government support for the work, Liberty Times reported.
The station has four pumps, each able to move four cubic meters of water per second. Together, they can move up to 16 cubic meters of water per second.
The site also has a flood storage pond that can hold about 19,000 tonnes of water. The water resources bureau said the pond stores rainwater first before the station pumps it out.
The bureau said the new station will work with nearby pump stations in Xuejia, including Xiuchang, Yangchoucuo, Huazong, and Xiaxizhou stations. During the June 25 rain, pump stations in the area removed about 1.03 million tonnes of water in total.
Huang said the project would help lower flood risks during heavy rain and typhoons. He said it would also improve safety for residents and better protect local industries.
The city said it will continue reviewing flood control needs across Tainan. It said it will seek more central government funding for pump stations, flood storage ponds, and drainage improvements.
