TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan Space Agency said Tuesday it has upgraded its Triton weather satellite data system, increasing forecast data output and delivery.
Triton was launched in 2023 and is capable of estimating sea-surface wind speeds from navigation signals. The satellite provides ocean wind data to monitor weather and ocean conditions.
TASA said it expanded its ground station coverage and its data-processing chain to improve ocean surface wind observations, per CNA. The agency said its data suite has been upgraded several times, and new changes expand usable data and shorten processing time for researchers.
TASA's partner, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, expanded its Alaskan station in 2025. Enhanced satellite signals have significantly improved the data received.
Triton's upgrade allows it to use an algorithm to clean up previously unusable data. Processing time has been reduced by half with much greater data reception.
The agency said Triton functions by converting, calibrating, integrating, and refining wind data. The latest upgrade has accelerated the process.
Triton is TASA's third weather-satellite mission, following Formosat-3 and Formosat-7. All three systems will later be integrated to provide optimal weather data for extreme-weather monitoring and ocean research, underscoring Taiwan's satellite contributions.
