TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung has installed retractable sunshades at select light rail transfer intersections, Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation said Monday.
The city’s MRT Bureau and the jointly selected three transfer points linking light rail stations C3 and C24 with nearby metro stations for the trial installation, per CNA. Each unit costs less than NT$300,000 (US$10,300).
The metro said the structures are designed with a lightweight, minimal framework to avoid blocking traffic signals, signage, or affecting metro operations, per Liberty Times. It said the shades are manually operated, allowing staff to fold them easily for maintenance or rapid retraction in severe weather.
Local residents have welcomed the pilot project, saying shade is essential in Kaohsiung’s hot climate and expressing hope that more crossings will be covered in the future, CNA reported.
The transit operator said further expansion will depend on the performance of the trial installations.
