TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two-thirds of Americans believe Taiwan's security matters to US security and prosperity, according to a survey by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute.
The institute's summer survey, released Monday, found 66% of respondents held that view, with support cutting across party lines, per CNA. The figure was higher among Republicans, at 72%, than among Democrats, at 62%.
The survey also found concern over China that surpassed other international challenges, with Republicans, Democrats, and supporters of US President Donald Trump largely sharing similar views across a range of issues.
Concern over China's role in the flow of fentanyl into the US topped the list at 82%, CNA reported. They were followed by China's ability to surveil US citizens (81%), purchases of US land (80%), and technology theft and unfair trade practices (79%).
Geopolitical concerns also ranked highly, with 75% of respondents expressing concern over China's military buildup. Another 74% worried China could use force to seize Taiwan, while the same percentage cited concerns over Beijing's human rights record.
The poll also found bipartisan support for publicly pressuring China to release political prisoners despite the risk of worsening bilateral ties, according to CNA. Overall, 59% backed the approach, including 56% of Democrats and 63% of Republicans.
The survey was conducted from May 26 to June 3 and included 1,555 respondents. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
