TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) led a bipartisan delegation of Taiwanese lawmakers to Capitol Hill on Friday, where they met with US House Speaker Mike Johnson to discuss security, trade, double taxation, and industrial cooperation.
According to a legislative press release, Han said Taiwan continues to face growing threats from China that could undermine regional security, per CNA. He said Taiwan will respond through a two-pronged strategy combining stronger national defense with the continued promotion of democratic values.
The delegation, accompanied by Taiwan Representative to the US Alexander Yui (俞大㵢), also sought legislative support for the US-Taiwan Double Taxation Fast-Track Act. The bill would provide tax treaty relief for individuals and businesses and help resolve double taxation issues between the two economies.
Han also highlighted Taiwan’s growing drone industry, saying the country places great importance on the sector and hopes to deepen cooperation with the US. He said closer collaboration in key industries would further strengthen bilateral ties.
Reflecting on the long-standing security partnership between Taiwan and the US, Han said Taiwan has recognized the importance of US support since President Harry Truman sent the US Seventh Fleet to the Taiwan Strait in 1950.
The delegation also discussed ways to expand Taiwan’s participation in international affairs and encourage greater Taiwanese investment in the US, per the report.
The eight-member delegation includes Han and seven lawmakers from across Taiwan’s political parties: three from the KMT, three from the DPP, and one from the Taiwan People’s Party. The six-day US visit began in Phoenix, Arizona, where the delegation visited TSMC, before traveling to Washington to meet members of Congress and other US government officials.
