TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Houston Astros pitcher Deng Kai-wei (鄧愷威) and Detroit Tigers infielder Lee Hao-yu (李灝宇) faced each other for the second time in Major League Baseball on Saturday, with Lee collecting a hit before Houston rallied for an 8-6 victory.
The matchup came just over two weeks after their first meeting on June 15, per CNA. Lee has remained in Detroit’s lineup since making his MLB debut, while Deng made another start for Houston.
Batting seventh and playing second base, Lee faced Deng for the first time in the bottom of the second inning. On the first pitch, a 92 mph sinker on the inside corner, Lee lined a single to right field.
The Tigers had runners on first and second with one out but were unable to score.
Deng ran into trouble in the third inning after loading the bases with one out. Kerry Carpenter then hit a grand slam to give Detroit a 4-3 lead.
The two met again later in the inning with one out and a runner on first. Deng needed just three pitches to retire Lee on a fly ball to right field before ending the inning with a strikeout.
In the fourth inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, Spencer Torkelson hit a go-ahead double, ending Deng’s outing. Deng finished with 58 pitches over 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, four of them earned.
Lee later hit a home run off Steven Okert, putting the Tigers up 6-4 in the fifth inning. Houston rallied late to defeat Detroit 8-6.
