TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Six areas in southern Taiwan suspended work and classes on Saturday as heavy rain continued across the country.
In Kaohsiung City’s Taoyuan District, work and classes were halted. The district office cited concerns over mountain road safety and the risk of landslides, according to CNA.
In Pingtung County, six townships — Donggang, Xinyuan, Nanzhou, Linbian, Kanding and Jiadong — also suspended work and classes. The county government cited widespread flooding in multiple areas that has disrupted transportation, according to CNA.
The Central Weather Administration also issued a heavy rain advisory covering 20 counties and cities across Taiwan on Saturday. Yunlin County is under localized torrential to extremely heavy rain alerts, according to Setn.
Nantou County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung and Pingtung have heavy to torrential rain warnings. Areas north of Miaoli, eastern Taiwan and Penghu may also experience heavy rain.
The agency warns of lightning and strong winds, urging caution in low-lying areas due to flooding risks. Those in mountain areas are advised to watch for landslides, rockfalls, debris flows and sudden surges in stream levels.
The rain is expected to continue through Sunday before gradually easing. The Directorate-General of Personnel Administration's website provides the latest updates on work and class suspensions.
