TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese infielder Cheng Tsung-che (鄭宗哲) was called up to the Major Leagues by the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
He started at shortstop and batted ninth against the Yankees. The 24-year-old was recalled from Triple-A Worcester after Red Sox starter Marcelo Mayer was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a forearm issue, according to CNA.
In the second inning, Cheng faced Yankees right-hander Will Warren with the bases loaded and no outs. He hit a grounder that allowed a runner to score, marking his very first run batted in at the Major League level.
In the fourth inning, Cheng collected his first MLB hit, a 101.5 mph shot against Warren. He did not score, as Boston’s offense was unable to continue the rally.
Cheng had been performing well at Triple-A Worcester before his call-up. This season, he batted .254 with seven home runs and 10 stolen bases, showing solid all-around offensive production.
