TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Kinmen County launched an AI pool monitoring system to improve public safety on Thursday.
Kinmen County Education Department Director Huang Ya-fen (黃雅芬) said at a press event the system cost NT$1.85 million (US$57,000), with NT$1.62 million subsidized by the Ministry of Sports. The county sports center added that staff and supporting tech give pool users peace of mind, per CNA.
Huang said the system picks up on suspected drowning by triggering alarms and syncing to lifeguards' wristwatches, shortening response times. The county plans to expand the system to other public pools if results meet expectations.
Kinmen-Mastu Joint Services Center Executive Director Wu Tseng-yun (吳增允) said lifeguards can tire and make mistakes. He added that smart tech can make up for these shortcomings.
Kinmen County Sports Development Center Director Wang Chih-jen (王志仁) said in a statement that 16 high-resolution cameras have been installed at the county pool. The system sends alerts to the lighting system, displays, and staff smartwatches to pinpoint unresponsive swimmers, per the Liberty Times.
