TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taiwan Evergreen Marine ship left the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by an unknown object off the coast of Oman on Thursday, Reuters reported Friday.
The Ever Lovely was struck about 3.6 nautical miles (6.7 kilometers) off the coast near Khawr Naiwah, Oman. Evergreen said the ship is owned by its Singapore subsidiary.
The company said the object hit the starboard side of the ship’s bridge. Crew members later found damage around the bridge windows.
Evergreen said the crew, vessel, and cargo were all safe. The ship’s main engine and navigation equipment were also working normally.
The company said the vessel is still safe to sail. It added the ship left the Strait of Hormuz after the incident.
Evergreen said the ship was following a route recommended by United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a British agency that monitors maritime security. The agency said Thursday that a cargo ship reported a suspected attack near the Omani coast while trying to pass through the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. It is one of the world’s most important routes for oil and commercial shipping and has been disrupted due to the Iran-US conflict.
