TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s benchmark stock index opened higher Thursday and gained more than 700 points during intraday trading before giving up part of its advance.
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX) closed up 211.66 points at 46,255.26. Total turnover reached NT$1.31 trillion (US$41.1 billion), according to CNA and Taiwan Index Plus.
Large index-weighted stocks, which have the greatest influence on TAIEX movement, delivered mixed performances. TSMC ended flat at NT$2,390 after late-session selling, according to CTEE.
MediaTek rose 0.58% to NT$4,310, while Foxconn gained 0.59% to NT$257.50. Delta Electronics fell 1% to NT$1,980, and ASE declined 1.84% to NT$641.
The number of stocks trading above NT$1,000 reached a record 56 during the session. Nan Ya Printed Circuit Board, GlobalWafers, Unimicron Technology, Voltronic Power Technology, and Mega Union Technology each crossed the threshold.
Chip designer Aspeed Technology, the highest-priced stock on the TAIEX, fell 4.91%. Cloud infrastructure provider Wiwynn, the second-highest priced stock, declined 4.21%.
In the memory sector, shares moved in different directions following Micron Technology’s stronger-than-expected quarterly results and improved outlook. Nanya Technology and Winbond Electronics each rose more than 7%.
Macronix International fell 6.1%, while Innodisk, Team Group, PSMC, and Phison Electronics reversed earlier gains to close lower. This reflected continued profit-taking at higher levels and differing market views on the industry's earnings outlook.
Micron’s results also supported sentiment in AI server-related stocks. Printed circuit board and substrate makers were among the strongest performers, with Unimicron, Nan Ya PCB, Kinsus Interconnect Technology, Lincotec, Iteq, and Ventec International Group all closing at daily limits.
Passive component stocks also saw renewed buying interest. Yageo rose 7.14%. Lelon Electronics, Abc Taiwan Electronics, Hua Jung Components, and Leatec Fine Ceramics each hit their daily limits.
Panel stocks showed mixed performance as gains in the sector moderated. Innolux gained 2.16% and was the most actively traded stock on the exchange, while AUO fell 0.33% and HannStar Display rose 0.52%.
Power semiconductor stocks moved into a consolidation phase after recent gains, with decliners outnumbering gainers. Vanguard International Semiconductor closed at its daily limit, while Jentech Precision Industrial, Eris Technology, Episil Technologies, Jih Lin Technology, and Gem Services each fell more than 5%.
Overall, the TAIEX ended higher after Micron’s earnings supported technology shares. Foreign institutional investors, however, remained net sellers and continued to build downside positions in index futures.
Market attention remained centered on AI, PCBs, and memory, alongside select traditional sectors. Whether the index can test the 47,000 level will depend on foreign fund flows and global technology market performance.
Marbo Investment Consulting CEO Wang Jung-hsu (王榮旭) said Taiwan’s market trailed South Korea and Japan on Thursday, leaving room for further gains. He added that investor interest has increasingly shifted toward AI-related stocks, with sector performance showing clear divergence, according to CTEE.
President Capital Management recommended that investors accumulate positions gradually while maintaining cash flexibility and avoiding excessive leverage. The brokerage said long-term opportunities remain in TSMC and supply chains linked to advanced semiconductor manufacturing and packaging, high-speed and optical transmission, substrates and PCBs, server rails, power semiconductors, specialty chemicals, as well as high-dividend financial and construction stocks.
Analyst Tsai Ching-lung (蔡慶龍) said the expansion of AI data centers and cloud infrastructure is driving higher demand for server rail systems. He added that heavier AI servers and more complex cooling designs are raising product specifications and prices, putting related suppliers in focus.
