TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A ferry carrying 330 travelers sailed from Chiayi County to Kinmen via Penghu on Thursday under the government’s Blue Highway program.
The trip was part of a Tourism Administration and Maritime and Port Bureau plan to promote island hopping and offer travelers new transportation options, per CNA. The program also includes routes between Keelung and Penghu and between Keelung and Hualien.
The Rikulau departed Budai in Chiayi County early Thursday on its maiden voyage. The ship stopped in Penghu before continuing to Kinmen, where it arrived at 1 p.m.
The Maritime and Port Bureau said it plans to introduce a larger ship with a displacement of up to 8,000 metric tons to serve the new route across the Taiwan Strait. The Kinmen County Government said the ferry offers travelers an alternative to air travel, according to CNA.
