TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Mekkhala is forecast to track northward along Taiwan's eastern waters this week.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said Mekkhala intensified into a typhoon on Sunday evening, per CNA. As of early Monday morning, it was located about 1,000 kilometers east-southeast of Eluanbi, with sustained winds of 154 kph with gusts of up to 190 kph.
Wu said the storm is moving northwest toward waters east of Taiwan before turning north beginning Tuesday. It is expected to pass northward along Taiwan's eastern side on Wednesday and Thursday while gradually weakening.
WeatherRisk meteorologist Wu Shengyu (吳聖宇) said outer circulation could increase moisture and bring showers and thunderstorms to central and southern Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday, per SET News.
