TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Freeway Bureau said heavy traffic is expected on multiple national highways on Friday, the first day of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.
The bureau said southbound traffic on western routes is expected to peak later in the day and urged drivers to depart after noon to avoid congestion. For National Freeway 5 southbound, motorists are advised to leave after 5 p.m. to bypass the heaviest traffic, according to CNA.
Between midnight and 5 a.m., traffic reached 8.9 million vehicle-kilometers, more than double the weekday average of about 4 million. Vehicle-kilometers measure the total distance traveled by all vehicles combined.
On National Freeway 1, slow traffic is expected southbound between the Airport Interchange and Yangmei, Yangmei and Toufen, and the Changhua System and Puyan System. Northbound congestion is expected between Yuanshan and the Dahu System.
On National Freeway 3, heavy traffic is expected southbound between Zhonghe and Guanxi, Kuaiquan and Wufeng, and Caotun and Mingjian. On National Freeway 5, congestion is expected southbound between the Nangang System and Toucheng, while on National Freeway 10, delays are possible eastbound between the Dingjin System and Yanchao.
The bureau urged drivers to avoid driving while fatigued, wear seat belts, and keep both hands on the wheel. It also warned against over-reliance on driver-assist systems.
Rain is expected in some areas this afternoon, which may worsen road conditions. Drivers are advised to increase following distance and avoid unnecessary lane changes.
