TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) urged US Congress on Thursday to swiftly pass double taxation relief legislation, saying the measure would boost bilateral investment.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Congressional Black Caucus led by Vice Chair Lucy McBath and including Valerie Foushee, per CNA. He thanked the lawmakers and the US Congress for their long-standing support for Taiwan and efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.
The president said Taiwan will continue strengthening its economic resilience and self-defense capabilities while expanding cooperation with the US in industry. He said closer ties would help safeguard regional peace and stability.
Lai also highlighted growing technology ties, including the Taiwan-US Semiconductor Education Alliance launched in May. He said the initiative will cultivate talent and create opportunities for cooperation in chips and AI.
A key focus of the meeting was the proposed Taiwan-US double taxation agreement, which remains pending in Congress. Lai said the legislation would reduce investment barriers, encourage business expansion and create a more favorable environment for trade and economic cooperation.
McBath said Taiwan and the US share a commitment to democracy, innovation, and economic development. She described a secure and prosperous Taiwan as important to regional stability and praised the country’s achievements in semiconductors and research.
