TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday welcomed a European Parliament resolution addressing transnational repression.
According to the ministry, the resolution examines how authoritarian regimes use surveillance, intimidation, and other tactics to silence critics and influence societies, per CNA. It highlights concerns over China’s overseas activities related to Taiwan, Tibet, and forced labor issues.
The resolution also cites alleged use of overseas organizations for surveillance and pressure on academics and artists to avoid Taiwan-related research or events. It calls for stronger EU coordination on legislation, victim protection, accountability, and sanctions.
The ministry said transnational repression is a challenge for democratic societies, as it undermines freedom of expression and human rights protections. The ministry said such practices also threaten democratic institutions.
Taiwan said it will continue to deepen cooperation with the EU and other like-minded partners. It added that collaboration will focus on information sharing, strengthening democratic resilience, and countering authoritarian coercion.
