TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – National Sun Yat-sen University and Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital signed an agreement on Wednesday to integrate academic research and clinical resources, expanding cooperation in AI-driven healthcare.
The deal formalizes a shift from project-based collaboration to a long-term, institutional platform aimed at building an international-grade smart healthcare ecosystem, according to the NSYSU press release. Both sides have collaborated since 2020 on medical student clinical training, faculty systems, interdisciplinary research, and smart healthcare development, per CNA.
Under the agreement, the partners will share research resources and clinical databases. This combines NSYSU’s strengths in AI, big data, information and communications technology, and semiconductors with the hospital’s clinical expertise to apply AI in diagnosis, treatment, and care processes.
Kaohsiung VGH will also support NSYSU’s College of Medicine in building a comprehensive clinical teaching system, offering internships and hands-on training for medical, nursing, and allied health students, while jointly developing curricula, core competencies, and faculty training that incorporate digital health and AI.
NSYSU President Li Chih-peng (李志鵬) said the university has recently prioritized smart healthcare development in recent years and that deeper cooperation will accelerate integration across teaching, research, clinical practice, and technology to advance smart hospitals and future medical innovation.
Hospital Superintendent Chen Chin-shuen (陳金順) said that given an aging society and the rapid rise of AI in medicine, healthcare systems must accelerate the integration of technology with clinical care. The partnership will help cultivate interdisciplinary talent and improve the quality of care.
NSYSU Vice President and College of Medicine Dean Sheu Bor-ching (許博欽) said the alliance will focus on smart wards, precision medicine, senior care, and big data analytics. This will leverage southern Taiwan’s semiconductor and smart technology industries to build an internationally competitive healthcare platform, per the Liberty Times.
