TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan set a record in the QS World University Rankings 2027, with four universities placing among the top 200, while National Taiwan University achieved its highest ranking at 54.
NTU ranked 63rd last year and 19th in Asia, per CNA. Taiwan also increased its number of top-200 universities from three to four: NTU (54th), National Tsing Hua University (142nd), National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (177th), and National Cheng Kung University (191st).
NTU remained the only Taiwanese university in the top 100.
All four universities achieved their highest-ever QS rankings, according to CNA. NCKU entered the top 200 for the first time, while NTHU posted the biggest gain, rising 34 places.
Other Taiwanese universities in the top 500 were National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (379th), National Taiwan Normal University (423rd), National Sun Yat-sen University (438th), and National Taipei University of Technology (494th). A total of 27 Taiwanese universities were included in the rankings.
QS noted that more Taiwanese universities fell in the rankings than rose. Of the 27 institutions, nine improved, 13 declined, and five were unchanged.
Employment Outcomes remained a major strength for Taiwan's universities, according to QS. NTU ranked 10th in the category, while National Chengchi University placed 65th.
QS said the results reflect graduates' strong job readiness and the benefits of university-industry collaboration, reported CNA. However, those strengths have yet to translate into equally strong Employer Reputation rankings internationally.
Only NTU ranked among the global top 100 for Employer Reputation, placing 64th. Most Taiwanese universities declined on that indicator.
QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter said Taiwan's performance reflects sustained investment in research and growing emphasis on talent development, CNA reported. He said government-university partnerships in semiconductors, AI, and advanced manufacturing are increasingly influencing university performance.
The 2027 QS World University Rankings included 1,500 universities from 106 countries and territories. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked first, while Imperial College London and Stanford University tied for second.
