TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration fined EVA Air NT$600,000 (US$20,000) after investigating the case of a flight attendant who worked while ill and later died, CNA reported Tuesday.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration said its investigation found EVA Air had violated the Civil Aviation Act. It ordered the airline to make immediate improvements.
The flight attendant, surnamed Sun (孫), worked on a Taipei-Milan round-trip flight in September last year while ill. Her condition worsened during the trip, and she died after returning to Taiwan on Oct. 10.
The case drew public attention to sick leave rules for flight attendants. It also raised questions about how airlines handle crew members who become unwell before or during duty.
The aviation agency said EVA Air failed to properly carry out rules requiring airlines to set and follow a cabin crew manual. The manual is used to guide cabin crew management and flight operations.
The agency said it issued the fine under Taiwan’s civil aviation law and told the airline to correct the problem immediately.
