TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport’s Terminal 3 is expected to be completed by late 2027 and will raise the share of self-check-in services to nearly 50%, CNA reported Tuesday.
Speaking during a construction site inspection, Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) said the NT$128.37 billion (US$4.28 billion) terminal is Taiwan’s largest single public building project since the Ten Major Construction Projects of the 1970s. Terminal 3 will include a main terminal, north and south concourses, office buildings, and 21 aircraft stands.
CTEE reported that the terminal will be able to handle 45 million passengers a year. Chen said the project is important because airport passenger numbers are expected to exceed 50 million, while air cargo value has doubled in recent years.
The terminal was designed by a team led by British architect Richard Rogers. Its design includes a wave-shaped roof, 16 large steel columns, and a cloud-like ceiling made of nearly 139,000 pieces.
Chen said the ceiling will cover an area about the size of 16 soccer fields. He said the roof drainage pipes alone will stretch about 10 km.
The airport said self-check-in counters will account for nearly half of check-in services at the new terminal. Staffed check-in counters will also be 60% to 70% longer than those at terminals 1 and 2, allowing passengers to check in baggage earlier and more smoothly.
The terminal will have 18 large elevators to help passengers move through the building. Its main terminal will also include five gates for smaller aircraft.
Chen said the terminal will use red, green, and blue lighting to change the color of the ceiling. He said passengers will see a new airport space when the terminal is completed.
Taoyuan Airport said the north concourse opened on Dec. 25, 2025. It said the main terminal was topped out in the first half of 2026, and interior work will begin in the second half of the year.
