TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei hosted the International Federation of Liberal Youth’s first meeting in Taiwan on Thursday, where young political leaders discussed Taiwan’s and Ukraine’s response to authoritarian pressure.
CNA reported that Taiwan’s DPP and Germany’s Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom co-hosted the meeting. The event brought together 140 young political leaders from more than 50 countries.
DPP Secretary-General Hsu Kuo-yung (徐國勇) said Taiwan’s democracy was built through the efforts of earlier generations. He said the DPP would continue to strengthen Taiwan’s democratic resilience and work with international partners to defend freedom.
International Federation of Liberal Youth President Hania Knio paid tribute to democracy activist Cheng Nan-jung (鄭南榕). Knio said Taiwan and Ukraine had shown courage and determination in the face of authoritarian pressure.
Hsu said he hoped the meeting would help young democratic leaders build closer ties. He said the event also gave delegates a chance to better understand Taiwan’s hard-won democracy.
The DPP said delegates would visit the Presidential Office and the Legislative Yuan during their stay. They will also attend discussions on democracy and exchange views on cross-border cooperation among young political leaders.
The International Federation of Liberal Youth is a global network of liberal youth groups and political party youth wings. This year’s meeting focused on how democracies can work together to respond to authoritarian challenges.
