TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Pingtung section of the Southern Taiwan Science Park broke ground Friday on Taiwan’s first semiconductor supply chain park.
CNA reported that the park will cover about 28 hectares and was proposed by TSMC. The project is designed to bring key suppliers closer to TSMC’s major chip production sites in southern Taiwan.
TSMC and seven suppliers joined the groundbreaking ceremony, as did President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), TSMC President C.C. Wei (魏哲家), Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米), and National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Cheng-wen (吳政忠).
Lai said the park is part of Taiwan’s plan to build a semiconductor corridor stretching from Chiayi and Tainan to Kaohsiung and Pingtung. He said the government would support the industry by ensuring reliable water and power supplies, sufficient land, and workforce development.
Lai said the project showed TSMC’s continued commitment to investing in Taiwan. He said the nation aims to build a strong and sustainable industrial system and become a global center for artificial intelligence development.
Wei said TSMC’s success depends on close support from its suppliers. He said the Pingtung park would give suppliers room to expand over the long term, which is important for the company’s future operations.
Wei thanked the Pingtung County Government for helping provide land for the project. He also said the county should attract more residents and expand educational resources, as a shortage of skilled workers could become a major challenge for Taiwan’s industrial growth.
