TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Republic of Somaliland Representative Office in Taiwan relocated to Taipei’s Tianmu diplomatic district on Friday.
Somaliland Representative to Taiwan Mahmoud Adam Jama Galaal said the new location, moved from Neihu District, is closer to other foreign missions and will help facilitate exchanges and bilateral cooperation, per CNA.
Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu (吳志中) attended the opening ceremony alongside foreign envoys stationed in Taiwan, per RTI. Wu said Taiwan and Somaliland have expanded cooperation since establishing representative offices in each other’s territories in 2020.
He said collaboration now spans agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, and more. Wu described Somaliland as Taiwan’s first major partner in East Africa and said the relationship could serve as a model for broader engagement across the continent.
Galaal thanked Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assisting with the relocation and said the two sides have achieved meaningful results across multiple sectors. He said the relationship is rooted in shared commitments to democracy, freedom, the rule of law and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Galaal added that he was confident Somaliland would gain recognition from more countries. He said Taiwan shows that a society can achieve international influence while maintaining a clear political direction and commitment to its principles.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but most countries do not recognize it as independent.
