TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Kaohsiung City Government visited Taipei on Friday to pitch a major urban renewal project for land in Zuoying District worth NT$14.6 billion in private investment.
Deputy Mayor Lin Chin-rong (林欽榮) led the briefing, highlighting the project as part of a broader push under Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) to accelerate urban renewal, per CNA. Since August 2020, Kaohsiung has launched 24 urban renewal projects worth NT$283.2 billion, Lin said, citing Ministry of Finance statistics that rank the city first nationwide for private investment for four consecutive years.
Lin said the arrival of TSMC in northern Kaohsiung has created a “semiconductor S corridor,” positioning Zuoying and Nanzih for industrial upgrading. Each semiconductor engineer typically generates demand for about eight supporting service jobs, driving local employment.
The Urban Development Bureau said the site includes part of the “Inter-University Research and Education Park for Key National Fields.” Universities have already established programs there to strengthen the area’s talent pipeline.
It is within a five-minute walk of Zuoying Station and a five-minute drive to the Kaohsiung Metro/HSR Zuoying Station complex, giving it strong transportation and lifestyle connectivity.
The city has completed 30% of the design work for key facilities, including a second hall and a multi-functional activity center. Design guidelines also mandate preserving the visual corridor of the historic Fengyi Gate.
The project was tendered on June 1, with bids due by 5 p.m. on Sept. 30. Tender requirements include providing 80 public parking spaces, according to the Kaohsiung City Government Urban Development Bureau.
