TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TSMC has been drawn into a US patent dispute, with the Ministry of Economic Affairs stressing the chip industry’s commitment to intellectual property compliance, CNA reported Thursday.
The ministry said the case is a corporate patent dispute being handled through US legal procedures and remains under review. It added that the government respects the judicial process and will continue monitoring developments. TSMC declined to comment on the matter.
According to Axios, a group of US Republican lawmakers urged the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to block imports of foreign-made chips found to infringe US patents. The lawmakers outlined their position in a May 22 letter to ITC Chair Amy Karpel.
An administrative law judge is expected to issue a preliminary ruling later this month, while the ITC could make a final decision in October.
The ministry said Taiwan’s semiconductor industry has long maintained strict intellectual property standards and works with supply-chain partners to ensure compliance. It added that it will stay in contact with affected companies and provide help.
