TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan City Government said Wednesday it signed a 50-year land-use agreement with TSMC for 22 plots of industrial land in Anding District to support the company’s chip plant expansion.
CNA reported that the agreement gives TSMC the right to use the land for 50 years. The arrangement allows the company to build facilities on the land without buying it.
The city said the land will be used for factory expansion linked to advanced semiconductor production. It said the project supports Taiwan’s goal of keeping high-end chipmaking in the country.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said advanced chip production is important to Taiwan’s economy and the global supply chain. He said Tainan has become a key base for the country’s semiconductor industry.
The city government said the project follows a central government policy to keep advanced semiconductor production in the nation. It said the National Science and Technology Council confirmed in February that the land-use project was important to national technology and industrial development, per Economics Daily News.
The city said officials moved quickly because the project was tied to national industrial needs. The Land Administration Bureau completed required legal steps, including land notices, compensation work, landowner reviews, price reviews, and negotiations.
Tainan Land Administration Bureau Director Chen Shu-mei (陳淑美) said the 22 plots include 19 plots in the Sucuo section and three plots in the Anding section. She said the city will next handle surface rights registration and land handover work, per Liberty Times.
The city said the wider development area will also include land for housing, businesses, and daily services. It said the goal is to build a technology district that supports chip production and local living needs.
