TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Civil Service said retired civil servants will receive unpaid pensions for the period from Dec. 28, 2025, to July 31, 2026, by Aug. 1, CNA reported Wednesday.
The legislature passed amendments last December to stop further cuts to civil servant pensions. The ministry said the amended law took effect on Dec. 28, the day it was published, because the law does not clearly state that it applies to earlier payments, per CTEE.
The ministry said pension payments from Aug. 1 will follow the results of a new review. It said any unpaid amount from Dec. 28, 2025, to July 31, 2026, will be paid by Aug. 1 at the latest.
The review covers retired civil servants’ income replacement rates, monthly retirement income, and monthly pension payments. The ministry previously said nearly 180,000 retired civil servants needed reviews of their payments.
Under the amendments, pension cuts for civil servants were stopped from 2024. Monthly pensions must also be adjusted when the consumer price index has risen by 5%.
The ministry said final payment amounts will follow adjustment plans approved by the Examination Yuan and the Cabinet. Those plans took effect on July 1, 2022, and Jan. 1, 2024, per Economics Daily News.
The ministry said pension payments and back payments will come from different sources, depending on when a retired civil servant worked. Payments for years of service before and after the newer pension system began will be funded by central and local government budgets and the pension fund.
KMT Legislator Weng Hsiao-ling (翁曉玲) criticized the ministry’s decision. She said the ministry should also repay pension differences for 2024 and 2025.
