TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan on Monday pledged support for earthquake recovery efforts in the Philippines after a magnitude 7.8 quake struck Mindanao.
The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 45 people have been killed, 487 injured, and 17 remain missing, CDN reported.
Taiwan's representative office in the Philippines on Tuesday relayed President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) message of solidarity with the Philippine people. In a post on X, Lai said Taiwan stands ready to provide any assistance needed and wished for a swift recovery and rebuilding effort.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X also expressed condolences over the loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquake. It extended its sympathies to the victims' families and those affected, while expressing hope that the impacted communities can return to normal as soon as possible.
The representative office said it is coordinating with Philippine authorities on the donation of relief supplies to assist affected communities, CNA reported. The office said the initiative aims to help victims recover while demonstrating the spirit of mutual assistance among the Taiwanese.
The NDRRMC disaster report indicated that as of Wednesday morning, the earthquake had triggered 2,023 aftershocks, with the largest a magnitude of 6.7, per GMA News. About 149,372 people have been affected, with more than 32,464 staying in evacuation centers.
The Department of Public Works and Highways said more than 18 bridges in Soccsksargen were damaged, including six that remain impassable, GMA News reported. The agency also reported damage to 41 roads, with 20 closed to traffic.
