TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) and Gorlitz District Administrator Stephan Meyer signed an agreement Tuesday to boost business, clean energy, and local exchanges.
CNA reported that Meyer said Gorlitz District has had friendly ties with Taiwan for many years. He said the agreement gives Taichung and Gorlitz a formal way to build closer cooperation.
Meyer said Taichung is an important center for smart manufacturing, precision engineering, and innovation in Asia. He said Gorlitz also has a strong base in machinery and equipment manufacturing, making the two sides natural partners in industry.
Gorlitz is in Germany’s Lausitz region, a former coal-mining area now shifting to cleaner energy. Meyer said he hopes Gorlitz can work with Taichung on net-zero emissions and green industries, per CTS News.
Meyer also said the planned German Centre for Astrophysics in Gorlitz will need large amounts of computing power. He said Taiwan’s semiconductor industry could help meet future technology needs linked to the center.
Gorlitz is near TSMC’s new factory being built in Germany. The district also sits near the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic, giving it a strong location for companies that want to enter central Europe.
Meyer said Gorlitz could become a bridge for Taiwan suppliers expanding into the region. He said he also hopes Taichung can serve as a gateway for Gorlitz to build stronger links with Asia, per Economic Daily News.
