TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will expand eligibility for its online passport renewal service beginning July 1, allowing more citizens to renew their passports without visiting a government office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Tuesday, per CNA.
MOFA Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) said at a press conference that citizens whose passports have expired or have less than one year of validity remaining will be eligible to renew them online using a Citizen Digital Certificate (自然人憑證).
Taiwan launched its conditional online passport renewal service on Jan. 1, 2025. Eligibility was later expanded to include passport holders with less than six months of validity remaining.
Hsiao said the latest expansion is intended to encourage greater use of the service. Under the revised rules, anyone who meets the same eligibility requirements as an in-person applicant can renew a passport online through the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
According to the ministry, more than 110,000 people have renewed their passports through the online system since its launch. Hsiao said the program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from users, per CNA.
To qualify, applicants must be adults with household registration in Taiwan. Their current passport must have expired or have less than one year of validity remaining, must not have been reported lost, and the personal information listed on the passport's data page must remain unchanged.
