TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the southern Philippines on Monday, prompting tsunami alerts across the western Pacific, with Taiwan among the areas included.
According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred off the coast of Mindanao at a depth of 35 kilometers, per CNA. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea could experience tsunami waves within the next three hours.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami advisories for multiple areas along Japan's Pacific coast. The agency said tsunami waves of up to 1 meter could reach different regions beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m. Japan time (10:30 a.m. Taiwan time).
