TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan is looking for a fair opportunity to participate in international affairs, National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Lin Fei-fan (林飛帆) told a NATO-backed forum in Latvia.
His appearance marked the first time an official representative of Taiwan had been invited to the Riga Stratcom Dialogue, per CNA. The NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence based in the Latvian capital sponsored the May 3-4 event.
China is changing the status quo in the Indo-Pacific to become the regional superpower, Lin told the meeting. Taiwan on the other hand continues to cooperate with countries sharing similar values to seek fair opportunities to participate in international affairs, he said.
Taiwan also hopes that the global community will not abandon cooperation with the country just because of Chinese arguments, Lin said. Beijing aims to sow distrust of the Taiwanese, while also trying to isolate the country.
At the forum, Lin presented Taiwan’s “National Public Safety Guide,” known as the “Little Orange Book” because of its bright cover. The publication deals with disaster preparedness and civil defense and received a warm reception, CNA reported.
More than 1,000 government officials, legislators, academics, military officers, and diplomats attended the Riga Dialogue. The forum where Lin spoke was titled “Taiwan: Navigating Strategic Communication in a Tense Environment,” while other forums discussed Japan and Pacific island nations.
